NFC North Chicago Bears

Finished 2004 season 5-11, last place in the NFC North

Key returning starters:
Rex Grossman – QB
Thomas Jones – RB
Brian Urlacher – LB
Mike Brown – S
Muhsin Muhammad – WR (Off-season pick up from Carolina)

The Bears came off a rough season, losing starting QB Rex Grossman early in the season. However, with some strong off-season moves (Muhammad) and a solid draft picking up RB Cedric Benson from Texas, the Bears are looking to turn some heads in the “Black-n-Blue” division.

2004 Stats:
Ranked 32nd overall in offense, #16 ranked in NFC
Ranked 21st overall in defense, #10 ranked in NFC

Your thoughts on the Chicago Bears this upcoming 2005 season...strengths/weaknesses and your prediction on where they will finish in the division.

Every division needs a last place team and the Bears will once again take on that privilege in 2005. However, I’d like to be a little positive about this Bears team, one that has some potential fantasy picks.

Muhsin Muhammad was my best receiver last year on my fantasy teams and this was an absolute fantastic pickup for the Bears. But really with the Bears it all boils down to can they remain healthy? They have been plagued by the injury bug year after year. 4 of their main defensive players missed quite a bit of time in 2004, even lost their starting QB for the season in week 3 I believe.

Some things I do like about the Bears…if they can remain healthy, their defense can compete with the rest of the NFL. When you mention some of the top LB in the game, Brian Urlacher should be mentioned. Guy is an animal and just plain sick. Rex Grossman actually isn’t a bad QB – he needs time to develop a little more and playing time will only make him better. Will he be an All-Pro? I’ll give him a 5% chance on that one, but he has a strong arm and is a leader (refer to career at Florida).

Thomas Jones had a pretty good season on 2004, 948 yards and 7 TD on 240 carries. Jones has struggled with his career to find himself a starting position and it won’t be any different in Chicago. With the draft pick of Cedric Benson, that should make an interesting battle for the starting RB position come opening weekend. However, since Benson is still a hold-out, Jones will most likely end up starting come week #1.

As far as my prediction – “Da-Bears” will finish in last place in the NFC North, 6-10 record at best, though I’d like to see the Bears compete and make this division race a little more interesting (I’m tired of seeing the Vikings and Packers always battle it out). Besides, this is a division with some kick-butt NFL talent!

This team is definitely a gamble this season. Steve hit most of the major points--I'll just point to one thing: last year's Bear's Packers game. I think this team has some mettle, if they can stay healthy, they just may turn heads--most importantly at QB and LB, tho. Ulracher has hall of fame potential--could be right behind ray Lewis for best LB in the game... but he's got to be healthy... as for fantasy picks, Muhammad remains a top-tier WR, up there with Marvin Harrison, Randy Moss and TO, for sure.

I agree about Muhammed except for one thing OTG - he doesn't have the solid QB to give him the ball to produce 2004 type numbers. Muhammed should be considered a starter in fantasy leagues but as a #2 or #2 receiver, unfortunately with Grossman, I don't believe Muhammed should be considered a #1

I've really been waiting a long time for the Bears to come around, I thought they did back in the late 90's when Mike Brown was returning all them picks for scores and Urlacher was a dominant force. It seems as if urlachers game has slipped a lot. He just isn't the same bashing defender that he once was, not even intimidating honestly. Maybe it was because of the few injuries he has had to put up with but really as he the leader of that D has softened so has has the rest of the D. As for the Bears O, well not much to say about it. I think they still have A Train so I don't know if we will see much of Cedrick this season but shit if they went out and got Benson instead of a Qb we might see a lot. Either way don't expect these Bums to do much this year or even get to .500, Bears 4-12

Red, A-Train won't even be a factor because A-Train isn't on their roster...He left in the offseason because of the emergence of Thomas Jones.

Even if the Bears still had A-Train, he still wouldn't be a factor unless Jones got injured. I think Jones' season last year was good enough for him to be considered the starter

I think since they are in a weak division the Bears could surprise alot of people. But it will depend on how well Grossman and Benson play.

As for Urlacher I think he needs two big defense tackles like he had in 2001. If he gets that kind of support it can free him up to run from sideline to sideline and make big plays. Otherwise I think he just won't be the kind of dominant player alot of folks think he can be.
