Defense!

Who is gonna be around next year on the D side of the ball? I know we're losing Pryce but who else are we gonna lose and are the Broncos gonna go after some D in this free agency? If so who do you think can put our D over the top and help carry us since Plummer and the O might not be able to carry the load?

First, the Broncos have to figure a way to keep some main guys before they think of picking anybody else up. Kenoy Kennedy, Lenny Walls, Kelly Herndon, Reggie Hayward are all possible departures. And with Trevor Pryce on the block, it looks like we are not going to get the perfect "personel" to have a great defense any time soon. I think they will do anything they can to keep Kennedy, and Walls, but we should consider Herndon a gonner. That means that Roc "burnt toast" Alexander will be our nickle back and will have to cover Reggie Wayne again next year in the first round of the playoffs. Since the Broncos are asking for draft picks for both Pryce and Droughns, it looks like they are going in to a "home grown" philosophy. It's to bad that they couldn't keep Bert Berry last year because he is a lot better DE than Hayward. Since Hayward is the top DE free agent, it looks like he will command a lot of money to stay in Denver.

The Broncos are in dire need of a big DT, somebody who can command a double team once in a while so the linebackers can rome free. Jason Ferguson, Chris Hovan, and Corey Simon are all unrestricted Free Agents, however I don't think the Broncos will be able to pick any one of them up due to their salary cap situation.

The saftey position would be solid if they can keep Kennedy. Nick Ferguson (former starter) is still in reserve, and Chris Young was a big hitter in last years pre-season games. Don't expect any changes here unless they lose Kennedy.

The Cornerback position is pretty solid for the starters but if we lose Herndon to free agency, we are going to have big holes to fill for the nickel and dime packages. Don't expect anyone better than Herndon to be picked up here. Maybe we should take a page from the Patriots and make Rod Smith play iron-man ball.

Despite the comments from Steve in an earlier post, the linebacker crew is the only solid part to the entire Broncos team. Williams and Wilson are very good, Pierce is young and talented (a 2nd round pick 2 years ago), Spragen and Sykes are reliable, and Chukwurah has very good pass rushing skills. Don't look for the Broncos to make any offseason moves with the linebacking core.

The defensive end position is the big wild card. If Pryce gets traded, and we lose Hayward to free agency, who the hell is gonna play DE? Raylee Johnson and Marco Coleman? I sure the hell hope not. Maybe they will make a run at John Abraham, but they will have to pony up a lot of money to get him.

I look for the Broncos to spend their early draft picks on the D-Line, Cornerback, and WR positions. We still need a backup QB, the o-line is in question with Dan Niel maybe leaving, and TE needs some attention.

There is a cornerback at Mesa State College who is like 6'2" but I can't remember his name.....they should draft him. I'll look in to getting his name and pass it along.

Man, and James you call me a "pessimist?" Look, bottom line is Denver’s offense is doing just fine and can carry their load. Remember that Denver was ranked #3 in total offense in the AFC and #5 overall in the NFL. To me, that is carrying a load. What hurt Denver offensively is the turnovers. Jake may have thrown for 20 INT, but don’t forget the 8 fumbles Denver had too. Defensively, I think Denver really needs to get things going in the turnover ratio. Denver was tied 2nd to last in the AFC with teams like Miami and Oakland. This is what is mind boggling to me; that Denver is a –10 in the turnover ratio, yet still make the playoffs. To me, that just shows a team right on the edge. Sure we could use quite a few less turnovers offensively, but the defense also needs to create more turnovers.

And there is no guarantee that we are going to lose Pryce. Denver is just shopping around right now because of two reasons

1) Salary Cap #, Pryce has a 9 million cap number
2) The team wanting to move a 3-4, though, I think Pryce would make a good fit in this defense. I really just think the main reason is the salary cap number.

But as far as defense is concerned next season, I think everyone will remain here, may lose a player or two, but no starters from last season (Pryce wasn’t a starter). It would be nice to have two healthy CBs also.

I think Denver needs to focus on a number of things if they are pursuing the 3-4 defense.

1) Find a solid nose guard. The defense just doesn’t work if the nose guard is mean and doesn’t control the line of scrimmage.
2) Safety help, I love Lynch, but he really has lost a step. Denver was burnt deep a few times last season (though Red and I still argue about this) Bailey was man to man, but had deep help (Lynch) and Lynch was out of position.
3) Another SOLID LB, Wilson and Williams will be just fine, but I don’t see Spragan and Sykes being the other 2 main LBs, or Pierce.

So in the draft, I’d like to see Denver pick up another LB, assuming there is one available that will drop that low in the draft. I think through free agency we’ll pick up a nose guard and hopefully another LB. It will be nice to have Walls healthy again, and if we can get pressure on the QB, I don’t see any deep passes being completed. But having our sack leader out for the season just really didn’t do that defense any good. But free agency, I think Kendrell Bell is free as well as Chris Claiborne, two very solid LB, and Pittsburgh NT Kendrick Clancy is also available. If Denver is to successfully run the 3-4, we’ll need solid, experienced athletes on the field.

And James, I agree that the LB crew is the best part of that defense, in the 4-3 system that is! Moving to a 3-4 with isn't ideal with two other LBs. Wilson and Williams are awesome, which is why Denver needs a 3rd solid LB and Spragan and Sykes can fill in for the 4th spot.

Recipe for Bronco Success:
1) 4 LBs that can put a serious rush on the QB (Chuckurwa (sp?) is a great example)

2) CBs that don't give up the long ball (ahem, Champ)

3) Get VanPelt into that #2 slot (did you guys see what he did in the preseason?)

4) Find a TE with two hands

Well obviously the Broncos need to dip into the free agency market. If we lose Pryce which looks like is going to happen and even lose Coleman or Hayword at the ends there is still a lot of good D lineman out there. I think the Broncos should look at getting these players: This is my wish list and I believe if they can pull off a few of these signings the Broncos will be looking good for 05.
D Lineman-
Well in a perfect world we would get John Abraham but that isn't going to happen. Here are the two I think they should go for.
Jason Gildon - Jags, He's young, he started only 6 games late in the season but the guy is a giant.
Chike Okeafor - Seahawks, Coming off a 9 sack season, very athletic for a big man. Perfect fit for the 3-4 D

Also I think the Broncos should look at getting Allen Rossum from the Atlanta Falcons. He is a damn good CB but he also brings more to the table. The Broncos have had problems at the punt/kick return position and Rossum would be able to take on both of those duties. At least the Broncos can get there money's worth with this guy at CB.

WOW! That shit is deep...

I don't think Chike Okeafer is any better than Reggie Hayward and Allen Rossum isn't any better than Kelly Herndon. So how in the hell would that make us "look good for 05'"?

Pull yer head out of yer ass!

You need to pull your head out of your ass Slapjack Jenkins! Yea I would love to keep Hayward but he is gonna be asking for high coin so if we can't keep em I'd like to see the Broncos go after Okeafor. As for Herndon and Rossum, Rossum has more to bring to the table returning kicks and punts.
