History repeats itself...

As we prepare for this Sundays Super Bowl we will take time to remember the greatest Super Bowl quarterback Joe Montana. Tom Brady still needs 2 more Super Bowl wins and another MVP to catch up to this great. Tom Brady's hero growing up was Joe Montana. They are both similar in the fact that they are both great quarterbacks. The question is are they a product of they're systems or are they destined to be great? I think that Montana is on a un achievable level that Brady will never get to.

Can't argue that Joe Montana was the greatest Super Bowl QB of all time, his remarkable record proves this, even his performances in each SB proves it. However, you bring up an interesting question about whether Montana and Brady are a product of the system or if they are just that great. My response to that is a bit of both. I don't strongly feel that Montana and Brady could have taken an average team to the Super Bowl. Let's be honest, the teams both these QB's play on are absolutely excellent, in all phases of the game. For New England, their defense has been the key factor the past 4 season. Sure Brady has thrown up decent numbers, but they weren't 14-2 because of Brady's arm. Now you can make an argument the Colts were 12-4 because of Manning's arm, but the Patriots are just that balanced.

At the same time, I also don't feel that an average QB, IE Jake Plummer or Drew Brees, could have taken either of the teams to the SB. So I feel that Brady and Montana are great leaders, great athletes, they are destined to be great, but they also have an excellent support system playing behind them.

I remember watching Montana in my early years and he was by far much better player then Brady. I
think that Brady has a lot more to do in his career to reach the level that Montana was on. He has the highest quarterback rating in the playoffs and for a season he was 2nd behind a Montana groomed Steve Young. I do agree with you Steve that they are both were parts of a great well rounded team but Montana was just on another level, look at the stats. Brady will still need to win another Super Bowl and have some more heroic come backs to achieve the Montana status.

Well of course Montana is up there, he's had a career to accomplish his feat, Brady is just beginning, perhaps nearing the middle of a career, so only time will tell. But Montana had a very dinstinct advantage, no NFL salary cap. I think winning in the NFL is much more difficult these days then back when Montana was at his prime. Not only the salary cap, but also the athletic ability, rules and other elements. Not taking anything away from Montana, he certainly was a great, but this day in age of football, what Brady has going on is something special!
