Running to the Sunset

Your thoughts on the illustrious career of the NFL's All-Time Leading Rusher Emmitt Smith as it comes to a close this week when he plans to announce his retirement. Is he the #1 RB of All-Time?

The #1 RB I ever saw play was Barry Sanders hands down. The best ever was probably Jim Brown. As for durability I'd have to go with Emmitt Smith. The guy took great care of his body to withstand that many years as a running back. It's always going to be a debate on wether or not he is the greatest. If running backs were judged like quarterbacks then he would have to be #1 since does have 3 super bowl trophy's to go along with his incredible numbers and being the all time leading rusher.

Emmitt Smith is a class act. Never once did you see him show boat nor did he make any bad comments about playing for the lowly Cardinals. Emmit Smith had several solid years as a running back for the Cowboys and for him to pull off that 900+ year last season was amazing for his age, not to mention he had 9 TD's as well.

Hard not to say Smith is the greatest NFL Rusher of all time, though you can easily make an argument for Sanders and Peyton, but sheer stats alone, Smith should be considered the #1 RB. Even this past season, way out of his prime, still was close a 1,000 back, on a TERRIBLE offense nonetheless. Over 18,000 yards rushing, 164 TD, 11 more TD in receptions. Here's another stat I find absolutely amazing, 4409 career carries and only fumbled 38 times (losing 22 of them), so that works out to be 116 touches per fumble or 200 touches per lost fumble, that is absoultely amazing! Then to top it off with 164 rushing TD's? Holy crap...sure his Cowboy teams were great teams, but seriously, he never rushed for 2,000 in a season, yet his body was able to withstand the punishing blows year after year. 18,000+ yards rushing, that is roughly 54,000 ft, or a little over 10.2 miles. WOW

Now that I did more research, the fumbles/fumbles lost number also included fumbles by receiving, so his rushing fumbles works out to be 138 touches per fumble or 221 touches per lost fumble.

Speaking of fumbles, the first 4 years of his NFL career, he never had 1 single fumble by rushing or receiving, and he even started in all but 4 games during that 4 year time span, that is 64 games total and he started in 60 of them. Having rushed for close to 6,000 yards with 1262 carries. That is AMAZING

Not only that but he also rushed for 1,586 yards and a total of 21 TD's in the playoffs! He rushed for over 100 yards in each of his 3 super bowl apperances.

Emmitt and I go back a long ways. The punk hit up on my girlfriend over dinner so I clocked him one and took his wallet. He's still one of the best running backs in the NFL though.
