Can the 49ers bounce back from having the worst record in the NFL a year ago? With the first selection in the draft, the 49ers picked up Alex Smith, who clearly has potential to be a star in the NFL, but will need to be groomed into that role. Can the 49ers remain healthy, which was a concern for their defense last season, losing all-pro LB Julian Peterson to injury early on.

Kind of weird seeing how the 49ers have turned out. I remember watching this team as a kid and wondering if they were ever going to be on the bottom of the list of powerhouse teams.
Now I wonder if this team will ever regain their once dominant ways and be back on top.
Not this year, or next year or the following year as far as I can tell.
Though Coach Nolan did do 1 right thing so far this off-season, decided to start Rattay for week #1 instead of Smith. Contrary to what people believe, a rookie QB should not start unless he is the clear cut best QB for that team. Smith, in his pathetic performances in pre-season clearly showed otherwise.
And just as a side note, I still fee Aaron Rodgers was the better QB of the two.
Anyway for this season, I bet you the Cardinals will get their revenge as the ONLY two games the 49ers won were over the Cards. Though I don't see a bright light at the end of the tunnel for this team I don't think they will be the worst in the NFL (I'm giving that to Cleveland).

Above are the number of wins the 49ers posted starting withtheir run in 1981. VERY IMPRESSIVE ! Note three 14 win seasons in 4 years!! This was the Yankees of football for almost two decades but have fallen lower than I ever would have imagined! Maybe new uniforms and a new stadium could breath life into this franchise. They drafted a QB for the future, but the future is not now. 3-13 !
Yeah it is a damn shame what the niners have become. But hey I have to admit I'm loving every minute of it, not only that but I would like to see them go 0-16 this season under Tim Rattail. The niners will have a shot if they get management to put some money into the team and try to pick up some free agents or something to help this god awful team. It is also a real shame about the death of Thomas Herrion. Hopefully the team can spark some soul and bounce back and win 5 but I doubt it. This team is going to be in the cellar for years to come until management is replaced. 1-15 yes I know that's sad.
Also remember they are suffering huge from the salary cap situation. The 49ers were able to put up those wins during those two decades because of no limitations of how much money to spend. So of course, you're right...they were the Yankees - now that we see a salary cap, we see wide spread adversity, which is why the Patriots run going on is even more impressive than what the Cowboys did in the 90's.
