Reuben! Reuben! Reuben!

Reuben Droughns showed up Sunday and carried the ball 30 times for 193 yards and caught a TD pass. I seen flashes of Mike Anderson's 1500 yard season when I seen Rueben carrying Carolina defenders on his back. The man stepped it up and made a believer out of Mike Shannahan and Denver Bronco fans everywhere. The big difference between Griffin and Droughns is that when Griffin get's hit he is down right there where ever he was tackled but when Droughns get's hit he falls for 3 yards. Reuben could not have picked a better time to step it up or Griffin couldn't have picked a better time to get hurt, either way it was great timing because the Broncos running game has done nothing since the opener against the lowely Cheifs. I want #34 to start against the Raiders next week and I hope Shannahan feels the same way. It's time to dance with a new back!

Another log onto the fire from me - KC's defense giving up 133 rushing yards per game - Carolina's 159 per game. Let Droughns have a chance to perform while facing a relatively good run defense...he performed well against a run defense that is 2nd worse in the NFL.

I'll disagree - I think if Q were healthy he could have done just as well as Droughns did. You're talking about a Carolina run defense that is struggling just as much as the Chiefs run defense. The true test would have to be Droughns going up against a solid run defense. Like this week - Oakland - granted Oakland is giving up 114 rushing yards per game, but Washington and Sapp plugging the middle is always tough to handle.

Glad to see Droughns play very well though - sometimes you're just gift wrapped a starting position which he was and you need to take advantage of it, as he did.

If he does become the starter, I won't complain at all - I think he can do the job that we need from a RB in our system, I just don't think saying Q isn't getting it done is a valid excuse. Remember Q had a big day against a crappy run defense too.

Yea Carolinas Defense is not the greatest but remember we are only 5 weeks into the season and the Broncos were not even in the top 15 rushing offenses coming into this game. 30 carries for 193!!! Come on! That speaks for itself. Reuben is a work horse and I highly doubt that Griffin could have carried the load with 30 carries. He probably would have fumbled one of those carries.

Again, you're jumping off the Q bandwagon - Q had just as good of a game against KC. Shit, Hearst could have had 170 yards against Carolina's defense. Here is the real problem with local fans like yourself. You think 1 performance has that player shitting gold bricks. Sure the running game hasn't been as good as it has recently - perhaps it's because the loss of Gibbs to Atlanta - sucks losing a great offensive line coach. Perhaps it's the experience of the line we currently have, a new right tackle, and a left tackle converted from right.

Another problem that you're not obviously seeing is simply the fact that Denver is a changed football team. Even last year, we weren't the high powered offense you're used to seeing from the Elway era - GET OVER IT. Defense is now getting it done - ranked #1 in the NFL. Thats right, the NFL. You just want the wins to look pretty, not going to happen.

Again, Droughns had a good day against a terrible run defense, sure his stats are impressive, but it's against a TERRIBLE RUN DEFENSE. Were Q's stats good against a terible run defense? Hell yeah they were, he even had more touchdowns. Your argument for starting Droughns is pathetic. As a fan of the Bronco's, I don't care who they start...why, because all backs we have are capable of performing well, because I believe it's the system more then the runner. Look at Portis right now, struggling...BAD. Yeah he has 400+ yards, but he has more of a fumbling issue then Q has.

I think Jesse you'd make a great reporter or columnist - you should look into the business. Those kind of people see 1 good thing and think it's the greatest. You can create so much controversy by your argument that Droughns should start...look into it man!!!

The fact is that Griffin will not be starting come Sunday so I must not be the only one who has more faith in Reuben...

or lack of faith for an injury to Griffin. Guess Atlanta should now start Matt Schaub or Ty Detmer since Vick isn't playing all that well - better yet, I'll use Jesse's "Faith System" and say bench Tomlinson because Chatman had 103 yards against the Jags defense, so obviously more faith should be given to the player with better stats.

Lets not also forget, we don't owe this victory to Droughns and his career day - we can thank the Panthers wonderful offensive lineman Matt Willig for his Wanna-Be Olympic Javalin throw of the ref's flag basically sealing the victory for us.

And yeah, the lowly Chiefs CosmicPal - perhaps beating up the High School junior Varsity Baltimore's offense can turn their season around, but that defense is terrible. Your team would be lucky to finish 3rd in the division ahead of the Raiders. Thats gotta suck, be picked by many "experts" to be Super Bowl bound, yet end up where you are now...hahahaha - GO BRONCOS

Dude please don't compare Tomlinson to Griffin. Tomlinson is a proven back, Griffin isn't. I thought you knew more about football then that. That was an awful example.

11:38 AM
Blogger Steve said...

Bad example? HAHAHA, since you're the biggest band wagon jumper I know, you're saying Droughns is a"proven runner"? Here is the problem again with you Jesse...you can't even understand what I am trying to compare. Of course I would never compare LT to Q, Q isn't even in the same league - I'm comparing both LT and Q's performances to their back-up's performance. How do you know football when you can't even see the whole picture?

11:43 AM

For the sake of Denver and to put your lopsided mind at ease, I hope they start Droughns at RB. This way if he plays well we can keep it going. But if he doesn't play well, then we can make fun of people with red hair who change the way they feel more often then Britney Spears does with her husband(s).

Bad Example, Tomlinson and Griffin are two differant players. Griffin has fumbled 3 times in his 4 games, one of the fumbles costed us a game.
As for the band wagon, sure I'll band wagon any back that rushes for 193 yards on 30 carries.
And yes there is still not a proven back in Denver, but this one just proved enough to get the nod to start against the Raiders.

No Chatman does not deserve to start, because that is LT's job and he hasn't done anything to lose it. As for Q, shoot he would never had started if it werent for Anderson going down. Griffin being pulled was only a matter of time. Do you actually think that if Griffin is 100% come Sunday that he will start vs. the Raiders. Tell me that!

Afraid to have everyone see my post there? Why not just delete everything I have written. Go ahead and pull a Jonathan...LOL. I know what the topics about, I've been discussing my reason for not being able to agree with your reasoning. You just have yet to come up with any real argument behind it, other then "193 yards on 30 carries" crap. I that is your only argument, then every back up with better stats should start the next game - or in your words has atleast earned that.

So answer the question, Do you think Q will start if 100%

12:09 PM
Blogger RED said...

Oh yea remember this one from the This ain't O.U. Q... post.
Steve says:
I think Mike should consider pulling this guy. My reasoning is simple - it's a business. The Bronco's are trying to go to the Super Bowl, Q isn't getting it done to Mike's standards.

12:10 PM
Blogger Steve said...

Yes - this blog sucks, I wrote a response and clicked on submit and it gave me an error...FUCKERS!!!! But yes, I think he will start. I also think that he will be on the hot seat. See, Q was #1 on the depth chart PRIOR to Anderson's injury, so Q was good enough to start then, no reason for an injury to keep him held out. But because Droughns had a good game, it turns that hot seat on to Q. If Q doesn't get the job done or is having any misqueues, he will be yanked for Droughns.

I agree with something you said earlier in regards to it was only a matter of time before Q gets yanked. My only reason for this is because Q isn't ideally the type of RB for this system. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Denver has more of a power-running system then a juke and create-your-own-holes system. However, that doesn't mean Q can't succeed here, that doesn't mean he should lose his starting position because of an injury. If he isn't getting it done in Oakland, he will be pulled for Droughns, but I do believe Q will start.

12:15 PM
Blogger Steve said...

Yeah, I remember that post and I still feel the same way. But you can't blame the runner if the defense is stacking 9 in the box. Droughns only proved himself against a terrible run defense. In no way does this mean that Q hasn't gotten the job done. So as I said in my previous comment, if Q doesn't get the job done in Oakland while starting, he will be pulled.

BOTTOM LINE, Number don't lie

RUSHING CAR YDS AVG
Griffin 81 295 3.6
Droughns40 223 5.6

12:26 PM
Blogger Steve said...

yeah, numbers don't lie

Q playing against a crappy run defense

23 carries, 156 yards, 6.8 avg., 2 rushing TD's, 1 passing touchdown

Droughns against an even crappier run defense

30 carries, 193 yards, 6.4 avg., 1 passing touchdown

12:30 PM
Blogger Steve said...

So lets take your stats for Q for the whole season and for Droughns for the whole season and do a little math.

For argument sake, lets remove the two best games since they were both against terrible defenses. So that means Droughns had 10 carries for 30 yards or 3.0 yards per carry...not all that impressive. That also means that Griffin had 58 carries for 139 yards for an unimpressive 2.4 yards per carry.

Either way you look at it, one RB isn't better then the other. The fumble that costed us the Jacksonville game wasn't all Griffin's fault, and if you say otherwise, find a picture of that exchange and post it tomorrow for another argument.

12:38 PM
Blogger RED said...

and the other 2 fumbles??? Atleast Reuben holds on to the ROCK.

12:41 PM
Blogger Steve said...

He's had half the carries as Q has - whose to say he wouldn't fumble as many times or more, or less...nobody knows, so trying to argue that is useless. Besides, I don't hear you screaming for Vick's head with all the troubles he is having (or is he "proven" too?) How do you achieve the "proven" status? Oh, you have to play and produce...so 5, scratch that, 4 games for Q this year and thats enough? His two games last season weren't good enough. And what about Portis? Oh, thats right, another "proven" player - proven that he can run well in a Denver offensive scheme. Now that he's not in it, **JUST IN, PORTIS FUMBLED AGAIN**

12:48 PM
Blogger Steve said...

And you have FINALLY, after all this time had given a good reason to bench Q and go with Droughns...that is because of the fumbles.

If I recall correcly, you said "Numbers don't lie" and posted stats for this season but mentioned nothing about the fumbles. So what really is your true reason for wanting Droughns to start John Kerry?

12:51 PM
Blogger quest4facts said...

My reasoning for starting Ruben in the Oaklanad game is simple, at least to me. Ever since the third and 2 play in Tampa Bay when he ran into jake on the exchange and still dragged 2 defenders past the 1st down marker. You could see in him, the attributes of the Broncos running backs of the 90's. The toughness, the act of falling forward for more yardage and the quick burst of speed once he hit the hole. Even before the Carolina game I was hoping that he would start ahead of Q because I seen the tough running that wasnt getting done by Griffin. There were many third down and short that Griffin wasn't getting anything done in the San Diego game and the Tampa Bay game. I think Griffin is a solid alternate to Droughns and that he (Griffin) should now
be the #2.

2:34 PM
Blogger Steve said...

Point understood Rich, good solid example. I think the coaching staff was a little spoiled with the speed Portis brought to the table and when Griffin displayed even more speed last year in Indy, the staff was really excited. Two totally different RB's though, Q and Droughns, two different running styles. I think Denver is best suited to utilize them both. I agree that Droughns would be better in 3rd and 1 situations, but is Droughns had Q's speed, those long runs yesterday would have been touchdowns. I think that's the difference. Q can really break one, when is the question. Is it worth waiting around??? I just don't feel any reason is justified to bench Q for Droughns after 1 game against a terrible run defense. My case is start Q if he's 100% at Oakland, but put the hot seat under him - he better perform or Droughns is going to step in. Droughns then has that chance to produce or basically be #2. Bell also has those flashes of brilliance, so why isn't he playing more? Being a good RB has a lot more then just pure natural rushing ability, Q from the backfield is a deadly weapon in the flats, especially if he is being covered by a LB. Plus he can block very well, he can hit the holes just fine (any arguments you make for SD, TB and Jax I'll discredit since they were having 8-9 players stacked against the run). Plus, if you looked at the stats in the TB game, you would have seen that Q only had 4 rushing attempts in the 1st half. What the hell can you expect from a RB with only 4 attempts? There are so many more factors involved other then looking at the rushing stats, Rich you brought up a good example, but I think Denver can use it to their advantage, not by sitting Q, but by using Droughns more often.

2:48 PM
Blogger RED said...

Q had only 4 rushing attempts in a half. For a coach like Shannahan who runs alot that shows little if any confidence in Griffin.

3:00 PM
Blogger Steve said...

Shanahan isn't the type, as has never been the type, of coach who if he loses faith in a player, he will continue to play him. Especially in a situation like Q's, since he isn't on a lucrative, long term contract. You may see it as Shanahan didn't have confidence, but watching the game, Shanahan realized the running game wasn't effective, and that includes everyone who touched the ball that day. But it's all about perception, guess that is why we aren't coaching in the NFL and he is - either way, Bronco's are 3-1 w/griffin and 1-0 without, so honestly, either way is fine with me.

3:16 PM
Blogger quest4facts said...

Steve said: "Bronco's are 3-1 w/griffin and 1-0 without, so honestly, either way is fine with me."

But if it weren't for griffin droppin the ball in every game but 1 we would be 5-0, holding onto the ball is a fundamental of the RB position, do it once, your ok but do it 4 times in 3 games, that is someone who can't do the fundamentals. give Droughns a try for 4 games see how he holds onto the ball.

3:25 PM
Blogger Steve said...

Please refer to a previous comment - if you at all consider that fumble against Jax Griffin's fault, then you obviously haven't seen it close enough. Plummer didn't get the ball in Q's hands, since you a RB, are you looking for the ball on a hand-off, or just assume it'll be in your mid section between your hands? If you're looking for the ball, then you aren't a good RB, if Jake would have put the ball where it needed to be, then this wouldn't be an issue.

3:29 PM
Blogger quest4facts said...

That is not a reason, that is an excuse, what about the other 3 fumbles, can you rationalize those away too?

4:02 PM
Blogger RED said...

you can ask lance this, a fumble is never the Q's fault, it was Griffins job to get that ball.

4:28 PM
Blogger Steve said...

Rich, we weren't talking about the other 3 fumbles, you specifically brought up the fumble against Jacksonville, so lets discuss it.

Q has had his share of fumbles, no denying that, but I don't blame him ALONE for that fumble in Jacksonville - that was combination of Plummer and Q. We didn't lose that game because of Q. In fact, if Elam hits that field goal earlier, we would have won 9-7 - I don't see you blaming him.

8:42 AM
Blogger Steve said...

Ask Lance that eh...so basically if Lance hands the ball off to you at your ankles, it's your job to get the ball even though as a RB you're supposed to be looking for the hole, looking for running room. Guess that means as a center it's never my fault if there is a bad exchange and it's always the QB's fault - I'll remember that next time I purposely snap the ball on the ground.

8:45 AM
Blogger Steve said...

Oh yeah, I guess I'll also remember that next time a QB throws a bad pass to a receiver, if that ball is intercepted, even-though it was never close to the receiver, it's the receivers fault.

8:48 AM
Blogger RED said...

Dude that ball wasn't at Griffins ankles. Maybe if it was he would have got it seeing that he is only 2'10. You just like Q because you guys play hide the pickel in the hot tubs at your complex.

8:49 AM
Blogger Steve said...

< cricket >< cricket > - Was that supposed to be funny? I guess I forgot to laugh, whoops! I was trying to make a point that the QB can be just as much at fault for a bad exchange as the RB is to go get that ball. I realize it wasn't at his ankles, I never said it was at his ankles, in fact I specifically said Lance in that sentence, not Plummer, so I'm not sure where you come off with your statement, it obviously makes no sense like your complete argument about this case.

Do I like Q, yeah, no problem admitting it. I also like Droughns. I don't favor one over the other and I don't care who starts. I now see why you want to vote for John Kerry, you change your mind more then he does. First you like Q, then you don't - what if he starts against Oakland and rushed for 150 yards w/2 TD's? Will you like him again? What if Droughns starts and rushes 30 times for 50 yards, 2 fumbles, will you be crying for a change at RB again? Where do you stand on this issue Jesse? You have thrown your opinion around many times and have reversed that opinion, yet have given no solid facts on why you reversed your stance.

8:58 AM
Blogger Steve said...

Oh yeah, and stick to the subject - don't be jealous Q and I play hide the pickle - remember you were crying about that yesterday because supposedly I got off the subject.

9:02 AM
Blogger Steve said...

Thanks for your input Lance - appears the Bronco's are going to go ahead and start Droughns working in Q for about 10-15 carries. I think this can be beneficial, having both runners in our system - two totally different running styles which will force the defense to prepare for both.

I can agree that Tatum is the man of the future, speed and power are his atributes, just don't know when he's going to get in. If Droughns continues his excellence in running, it's going to be hard to sit him down and put in Bell. Lot of opportunities this weekend against the Raiders, lets just hope Shanahan sticks to the game plan and really control the clock.
