Champ or Chump?

Champ or Chump that is my question. We ship off our best player for Champ Bailey and you think we would get that so called Shut Down Corner. It's been more like that pick on corner. Champ Bailey got picked on last night and even gave up the game winning TD and made Jerry Porter look more like Jerry Rice. Herndon came through, Lenny Walls came through, shoot the entire Defense came through last night except for big dollar Bailey. After Al Wilson stopped Tyrone Wheatley on a 4th and 1 play I thought for sure that would have set the tone for the night but instead the Broncos let the Raiders hang around and the play of Champ Bailey could have single handedly been the reason we lost. I can see Porter getting position on Bailey for the slant that he got for a TD, and yes maybe he slipped on the deep one that set up a TD but the final TD that Bailey gift wrapped for Porter was the big one. Champ or Chump?

No comment on your post as I obviously don't agree with it. Sure CHAMP didn't play that well, but quite frankly, the defense didn't play that great either. Oh yeah, and those two fumbles Mr Droughns had along with the interception Plummer had didn't help either.

Did you miss the TD that Champ gave up for the win?

Did you miss the rest of the game?

I think the rest of the D did very well , especially for being in a prevent defense the 2nd half. As for Champ, how many points alon were scored on him?

If you review the game, the defensive back that I give more blame for this game is John Lynch. Especially during the 2nd half, I constantly seen Lynch out of position and missing reads on where he should be on the field and who he should cover. The winning drive Lynch gave up that 60+ yard play to Ronald Curry that pretty much sealed the game. He was running with his back to the receiver at one point because he was so out of position. I think the D-line didn't win the battle in the trenches. Kerry Collins had ALL DAY to throw the ball and Plummer's pocket collapsed regularly. A cornerbacks greatest asset is not his speed his height or his hands, it's his pass rush and everyone knows that.

Yea Lynch did look like a fool, but never the less Champ let his guy in the middle with the game on the line. It was 4th down, it's the Broncos D VS the Raiders O, who should win that situation every time?

Rich, you made it very clear, thanks man. Obviously Jesse's philosophy of a team is blaming the loss on 1 player. Nevermind the fact that Droughns two fumbles were costly, 1st one killing the opening drive and the 2nd leading to an Oakland score. Or the Plummer interception killing another great opportunity to score. Yo Jesse, why not blame the long snapper for having a high snap which caused Elam to hit the wrong part of the ball effectively making it easier to block? Let Jesse blame Champ Bailey, remember two weeks ago he was praising him like he was a God.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it was Champ giving up the big plays, but Rich is right- defenses win games up front, first- by stopping the run, and then secondly, by creating pressure on the QB. If a defense can't perform either of those two tasks (i.e. KC's D), then an offense has the greater advantage on each and every play.

In Champ's defense though- it was snowing heavily out there. A defensive back is the most vulnerable when it comes to snow. You have to remember, only the WR and QB know where the WR should be going- the defensive back doesn't. So, when the WR makes a cut, and then fakes- the defensive back is vulnerable to slipping, and worst of all- falling. (Of course, so is the WR, but the WR still has the ultimate advantage).

Snow also makes the defenses play a zone as blitz packages are nearly thrown out the window. Blitzes require speed and grace- which is hampered by snow. Therefore, the defense relies heavily on the defensive line to win the battles in the trenches. This is where Denver lost big.

I understand Champ hasn't lived up to the fan's expectations, but the Denver defense is greatly improved overall. Champ is a class act and commands respect around the league. Portis was a total asshat who was/is only concerned for himself and his own stats, rather than benefiting the team. You guys got a classy guy, plus an additional draft pick for someone who in my mind- was profoundly over-rated, but more importantly- was nowhere near the team player Shanny was looking for.

The Bottom Line:
Champ's assignment: Cover Jerry Porter
Jerry Porter 6 receptions, 135 YDS, 3 TD's.
Champ Choked.
Steve quit making excuses for players, especially high salary one's who are counted on to step it up in situations like this. This just goes to prove my point that the Broncos don't step it up when the game is on the line. Go re read the roller coaster ride post if you need to be refreshed.

Excuses? Please!!!! You are the most hypocritical fan I have ever known. I'm not making shit excuses for Bailey, I even said, and I quote "Sure CHAMP didn't play that well, but quite frankly, the defense didn't play that great either." Where did I make an excuse for him? I thought this blogger was for people who knew what they were talking about, you have the mentality of a 5 year old and quite frankly have proven to me your "extensive" knowledge about the game...or should I say, lack there of.

Please dude pull your head out of your ass. Where did I praise Champ like a god??? Can you direct me to that post please. As for knowing the game obviusly you are lacking in that department. Otherwise you would be able to see that any sports debate is a good thing. It's not very entertaining to sit here and agree with you or vice versa.

Hmmm...I remember a phone call, 1 of many, after the Bronco's beat the Texans and the other person on the phone saying damn Champ is the shit. Sounds like praising to me...

And as far as your knowledge is concerned, Rich and Cosmic can clearly see that the loss wasn't just because of Champ as you put it. Try pulling your head out of your ass and watch the entire game instead of just looking at the stats afterwards and making up your mind then.

Steve
I surfed on to your site from the other sports blogs. My name is Mike and I live in Arvada CO. I have to disagree with you, maybe you should have went to the game like me, I seen Bailey get burned like 4 times and 3 of them were for touchdowns. I am not sure what game you were watching? I have been a season ticket holder for 14 years now and never once seen my Broncos put so much money and hope into one player. I think you need to look at the plays where he was getting burned. I was sitting in the south end zone and totally seen Champ bailey give up coverage on Porter who had already burned him for the same type of play once because he had position on him. Bailey is not used to the cold weather yet. I also do not believe the Broncos will make it to the playoffs this year. That will be a disappointment if they don't. Champ was a waste of money and I agree he is a Chump!

Oh Mr Anonymous...how funny you should mention a couple of things. I did in fact go to the game, section 317, rwo 19, seats 20 and 21 where my fiancee and I froze our asses off.

Now, I won't disagree with you stating that Denver shouldn't have spent so much $ on Champ, but if you would read the entire blog, you would also know the argument isn't whether or not Champ is a Chump or not, it's the argument of whether or not Champ lost the game for Denver that night. Not once did I defend Champ's play, as I know (from being at the game too) that he was burned multiple times. However, That wasn't the reason for the loss, sure it contributed, but it wasn't the sole reason. And Mr Anonymous, since you are a season ticket holder (which is way cool), I figure you would have seen quite a few games (14 years x 8 games is 112 games), you might pick up a little knowledge about defenses. Because if you know anything about defenses, you would have seen Lynch out of position on those deep balls. The coverage wasn't man to man, it's still a two deep zone with the safties which means Lynch needs to be beyond the receiver on any deep ball, which he wasn't! Sure Champ was burned, but me being a big guy can burn the hell out of you on snowy conditions because the offensive player has a HUGE advantage. Please refer to Cosmic's excellent description of this above...

Good comments though, nice to see people from the outside put their thoughts to this post.
