What happened to the...?

I know being a Bronco's fan I am scratching my cranium wondering where the #1 ranked NFL defense has been the past 2 weeks. I was having a conversation about the defense this morning and still couldn't come up with a resonable excuse for why the Bronco's defense has been lack-luster the past 2 weeks.

But then I looked at the bigger picture and realized this isn't just a problem with the Bronco's. The prosperity in the NFL is so great these days that people are now seeing the greatest show on turf (Rams of Kurt Warner days) multiplied indefinetly. I mean Jake Plummer throwing for 499 yards, 4 TD's? Manning 5 TD's 480 yards, Drew Brees 290 yards 5 TD's. . .Culpepper throwing 5 TD's in a game on three different occasions. Holmes 4 rushing TD's in 1 game (oh, and Blaylock had the same amount, in the same game, for the SAME TEAM).

Is it me, or where has the D-FENCE gone?

I think it has to do with the new rules for the cornerbacks as far as all the passing yards are concerned. The NFL wants to see points put on the boards, and that is what they are getting. I want to see more tough D out there, not this panzy ass shit to make it easier for recievers to get off the ball. You can't be risky anymore with a blitz package because you cant bump the recievers, pure and simple that is my explanation. You know when you send blitzers you gotta have bump man on the WR's but this damn rule is changing the game, yea sure it is exciting to see Plummer throw for 499, but come on let;s get real, the real advantage is Mike Vick in all of this, send a vlitz, you got your corners playing patty cake and just now he is learning to take advantage of it in his West Coast system. That is all I can come up with

Oh I agree, the rule has for sure been fully exposed around the league. I'm afraid the rules committe is going to make the NFL like the NBA. One tiny little touch and it's a freakin' foul. It sure is nice to see the great numbers, especially if you have those guys in your fantasy leagues, but, there is just no emphasis on the defense. Guys like Ray Lewis are left out to dry after being known as one of the greatest linebackers. Who cares about defense if you can have a sub-par QB throw for 5 TD's in a game. The theory doesn't make sense. They need to let these guys get back to playing football the way it was meant to be played.

yea that is the biggest fucking mistake they made man. It takes the meaning out of the game, defense wins championships, shit we might see the damn Chiefs get back into this thing because of this rule.

Well, I still believe that defense wins championships, it's just unfortunate the defense will be giving up 300 yards per game, 20+ points. How sad, that might actually be the best defense by the end of the year (I take that back...with teams like the Bears and 49ers (wait, didn't Rattay also have like 400+ yards passing against the Cards?)) Geesh...CURSE THE RULE EMPHASIS!!!

I think Denver's declining defensive effort is directly related to the lackluster pass rush. Just like on offense, Running the ball sets up the pass, the pass rush on defense sets up the coverages and creates problems for offenses. I think once Denver gets an aggressive and dominant pass rush as it had for most of its previous games, then they can make a QB hurry on his reads, get a sack or an int because of it. What do you guys think?

I agree with you in the part that the defense starts with the D Line. Trevor Pryce will be back and hopefully he has a huge enough impact to get us to the promise land. As for where it really starts it starts on TOP with Mike Shannahan, how long has he been here? 9 years and only 2 years we won in the playoffs, and them 2 years he had Elway and Davis. In the NFL it's what have you done for me lately? Not what did you do!
