Summer Brees makes me feel fine

The task at hand: Stop this man! Drew Brees is having the season of his life so far tossing for 21 TD's and only 3 picks and has even ran for 2 scores. Not only that but Brees has lead his team into 1st place with an 8-3 record and a chance to widen the gap this weekend against the Broncos. This Charger team is unlike the Charger teams we've seen the past few years that jump out to great starts but finish in last. This Charger team is for real coming into next week's game with the 9th ranked defense in the AFC with an impressive rush defense only giving up 79 yards a game. The Broncos will be put to the test this weekend in a playoff like atmosphere in San Diego. The Broncos will need to stop the Brees-Gates connection if they want to come out on top. Who would have known this would be the big game in the AFC west this year. If I would have told you the Chargers would be in the big game in the AFC west you would have laughed. If Denver can pull this off this might be the jump start to get them back on track and off the inconsistant railroad they have been on.

I will simply say go Broncos! When Champ Bailey steps up and makes big plays watch how Jesse will start to praise him like he is a God again.

Yep try posting something worth reading. This doesn't have anything to do with this post.

Try having a post worth reading and making comments on. Who care how well the Charges are doing...every Denver fan knows this is a huge game, as well as every NFL analyst...where's the controversy or the "different perspective" as you call it?

Geez, Steve...kewl it, man. I applaud Jesse for posting this bit on Drew "Summer" Brees and how surprisingly well he's doing this year- not to mention Marty's Chargers.

I agree, before the season began, if someone claimed the Chargers would be at the top of the AFC West at this point of the season, I would have laughed my arse off. (However, I did tell a few souls the Chargers would be he surprise team, but would still be in 3rd place of the AFC W behind KC and Denver- I honestly believed the Raiders were truly over-rated).

Lastly, Jesse has been posting a few NON-Broncos blogs. I thought this was to be a sports blog anyhow-one NOT entirely devoted to the Broncos. Enjoy the success of the Chargers now- and just worry about the Broncos winning, for we all know- when Marty gets the Chargers into the playoffs- they'll lose- 'cause Marty can't win the big one.

Point taken Cosmic, but re-read the post Jesse put up there, this wasn't about Brees, this is about what Denver needs to do to stop them and how big of a game it is. I wish it were about other aspects of sports, but no, it's ultimately about the Bronco's.

However, if we wish to change the stupid post to something talking about the Charges and the season they are having, then that would be a great discussion.

In fact, we had a little discussion about this yesterday when another colleague simply said that McCardell was "over-rated" - which I happen to really disagree with. I think Gates is having the season he is having because teams are now focused on double-covering McCardell (which I think is necessary due to his athletism).

I also think Brees is over-rated - seems like he is having one of those contract year seasons...didn't Griese have the same season in Denver before his huge contract extension? Wasn't he like 19-2 TD/INT ratio before injuring himself in the Raider game with a shoulder problem? Look what happened when he got his contract, same old Griese we knew from before. This has happened many times, a player during a contract year has a steller season, gets the $ sflashed his way, takes it and ends up being a bust...Now, I'm not taking anything away from Brees, obviously his stats are outstanding, the fact remains he only has 3 picks this season, that is remarkable.

1st off this post would be about Brees regardless of who the Chargers play, it just so happens that Denver is they're next opponent and that was the context I used. 2nd - Brees is not over-rated because he is actually kicking ass and looks unstoppable and if it were not for Manning he's be starting in the Pro Bowl. 3rd - You talk about the contract year player and all you can bring up is Bronco misery with Griese. WHat other so called contract year players do you know. 4th - Griese is doing pretty damn good now isn't he?

You bring up interesting points...I say over-rated for the following reasons. He is just having 1 great season. Your claim that he isn't over-rated is because "he's kicking ass". Sure, I don't disagree with that, or the fact that he would be a Pro Bowl player this year if Manning wasn't as hot as he is this year. But let's face it, over the course of Brees' career, he hasn't done shit except for this season. If he can keep this up next season whether or not he's with the Charges has yet to be seen...but that will be the true test.

As far as only bringing up 1 former player regarding contract years, I'm sure I can easily muster up plenty more. Griese isn't doing all that "great" right now anyway. 12 TD 5 INT, good QB rating, but only half the games...what has Griese done since his great season in Denver? Oh yeah, switched teams, was named 3rd string and only was tossed into the starting roll because of injuries. Makes you wonder if he is just playing extra special because he knows it's his last real chance at being a starter?

I'm curious to see next season and the events that unfold. For Brees sake, I hope he succeeds, he has a hot wife and I thought he would do well in the NFL after leaving Purdue.

As far has him having a hot wife I don't know, neither do I know what that has to do with anything. And you say Brees hasn't done anything special until this year, yea that is true and that is because Coach Marty has changed his approach to coaching, instead of old Marty ball (boring, run all the time) He is actually giving Brees something to work with and the power to audible and call his own plays for the 1st time in his career. You know by past Quarterbacks, even the great one's Ex. Elway, it takes a few years to see what a Q can really do. Brees has been under pressure since his 1st game in the league and he is now surpassing any expectations that he has for him. Watch , he is a Q to recon with and the Broncos better have a brilliant plan to stop him!

The strange thing about Brees is that be has been under the pressure since really last season. Wasn't he benched for a couple of games last year for Flutie Flakes? Now, I completely agree with you that it takes a few years for the QB's to really feel comfortable, that is evident with the majority of QB's. I'm just wondering why the Charges have continued to, or lack of continuance of< sticking with Brees. Obviously by selecting Rivers, they made up their mind to move to a different QB. It's like that basically gave up on him after the 2nd season.

So as I said, it'll be interesting to see what transpires next season, where he'll end up and whether or not he can provide the same level of play he is now (I don't expect the same numbers for a different team due to the fact it'll be a different offense).

By the way, I saw his wife in a Sports Illustrated magazine after he was drafted, has nothing to do with anything, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

Mike here from Arvada : You guys have to give credit when credit is due. Brees has been unstoppable this season and with Gates playing at the high level he has the Chargers look like the team to beat this year in the AFC west. Like I said I have been a season ticket holder for 14 years now and I am not one of those fans that just kiss ass to the home team like this guy Steve. There comes a time when you have to step out of the circle and take a look at what is going on. The Broncos will not make the playoffs this year unless the Broncos can come up with a better scheme.

In the NFL it is a copycat league and Shanahan is running out of new looks on the offensive side of the ball. For the Broncos to beat the Chargers they will need to send the blitz at young Brees. Not only that but they will need to put major points on the board, look for Plummer to have a big day since it looks like Droughns has came back to earth and is now playing like a undrafted running back / kick returner that he is. I will go ahead and call it the Chargers in this one 38 - 24.

Yo Mike, glad to have you back! So you're saying that I kiss ass to the home team? HAHAHAHAHA...please read all of the posts and you'll see that I enjoy playing the devils advocate. In fact, if you knew anything about me at all, you would know that I am very critical of the "home team."

I being a sports fan can appreciate your comments regarding the topic, but don't pretend like you know me. You just got back slapped on your stupid comment about me going to the game and now you're trying to say I kiss ass to the home team. If you don't agree with my comments go ahead and write so, but seriously...you don't know me so don't pretend like you wanna be me.

Sad sad sad...guess it's now time to defend myself and make my point of view very clear since it appears my fellow readers of this site seem to think that I'm being an asshole, or uptight or whatever it is you want to call it. I was even referred to as a "homer" by my best friend who I seriously thought knew me better then that.

Please re-read the post by Jesse…here, I will simply copy and paste the context for your enjoyment, “The task at hand: Stop this man! Drew Brees is having the season of his life so far tossing for 21 TD's and only 3 picks and has even ran for 2 scores. Not only that but Brees has lead his team into 1st place with an 8-3 record and a chance to widen the gap this weekend against the Broncos. If Denver can pull this off this might be the jump start to get them back on track and off the inconsistant railroad they have been on.”

You will clearly see that this post has to do with the game coming up between the Charges and Bronco’s – it’s clearly not about how well the Charges are doing. In fact the last line states if Denver can pull this off…when you end a post of that nature, does it give a clear idea that this post is about how well the Charges, more specifically Drew Brees is playing?

Now, please refer to my 3rd comment, which I quote, “However, if we wish to change the stupid post to something talking about the Charges and the season they are having, then that would be a great discussion.” Then I go on and talk about how I feel Brees is having a great season even though I strongly feel that it’s a contract year season and he is over-rated. I even specifically said, and I quote again “If he can keep this up next season whether or not he's with the Charges has yet to be seen...but that will be the true test.” How this makes me a “homer” I have no idea…I can even point to other posts about other teams which I talk about them and not about the Bronco’s.

Now, to the asshole part as some would call it. Mike from Arvada, as much I appreciate his comments basically made it a point to say that I should have went to the game. I did in fact go to that game. Then he said that I kiss the home team’s ass, basically again calling me a homer. One of my biggest petpieves is people making comments without specifically stating why they feel that way. I don’t have a problem with you calling me a homer, but why? Where are your examples? If you can provide the examples then we can have a discussion about it. Mike I could have said you were a moron, but I didn’t, why? No proof that you’re a moron. I stated I think Brees is over-rated and I gave specific reasons as to why I thought so.

Finally, my best friend appreciates my different perspective on the posts, and that’s what makes this site great. He said, and I totally agree, that if we all agreed on everything, that would make for a boring post. But calling me out saying I’m something without providing examples is flat out wrong. If you’re going to call me homer, provide examples. I even tried to have a discussion over e-mail with my best friend as to why he called me a homer, his reasonings were “look at the posts, you’re being biased”…how so, be specific, which he couldn’t be. He also said I leaned towards the Bronco’s defense? How so? I would assume this had to be in regards to the Champ Bailey post. Please refer to my first comment in that post, and I’ll quote again “Sure CHAMP didn't play that well, but quite frankly, the defense didn't play that great either. Oh yeah, and those two fumbles Mr Droughns had along with the interception Plummer had didn't help either.” How am I defending anyone, or the defense or hell, how can you call me a homer with a comment like this? If I kissed the Bronco’s ass, I would have made a dumb comment like it was the ref’s fault we lost the game or blamed something else other then the Bronco’s.

So again, I have provided my reasons, please provide yours. If you can’t provide reasons because that is just how you feel, then don’t take offense to me when I make comments which make me sound like an asshole.

HAHAHAHAHA, good post Mike - sounds to me like that little football challenge got under your skin. But with those kind words, should I be shaking in my shoes? You know, you and your team could be NFL Pro-Bowlers, I still wouldn't be afraid to step out on the field and go heads. If I get beat, I'll go back to the drawing board and request a rematch.

Problem with you is simple, you need people to believe you and like you for who you are, why can't you just be happy with you are?

Perhaps Mike needs a hug?

Mike, if you feel it necessary to cyber punch me, go right ahead, but I gotta be honest, it's probably not going to do anything physically to me.

Oh, and if you're talking about slugs, I do hope you're not trying to pull some Harry Potter crap and using a spell on me to eat slugs...remember Ron tried that and failed. Also, I'll let you on a little secret, Harry Potter isn't real...hate to break it to you.
