I think the US will do ok, but this is just really bad for baseball on a whole. You put these athletes in competition prior to the start of the season expecting them to be ready...generally it takes a good training camp for a superstar to really feel ready to go for a season - this could seriously involve a lot of injuries to players, etc.
I'm sure there is really a "good time" for this to take place, considering a season starts in Feb (training camp) and ends in October, just not that much time inbetween.
if you're going to do this, like the olympics, take a 3 week vacation during the middle of the season and have this done (kind of like all-star break), or just don't do it at all.
There are a lot of "superstar" players who aren't playing because of the timing and if you're excited about seeing this while missing out on those players, then good for you...but for the rest of us, why see a big time event without all the best players doing it?
That's just exactly what I am talking about red, there is NO good time for this to take place, not before the season, or after the season or during the season. When you can't get all superstars to commit because of timing issues, then that should be a red-flag saying the timing is indeed not right.
I totally disagree with you Steve, this is the best time to do it, at least for baseball itself. It will get the fan that is from another country or the fan who has little interest in baseball involved before the season even starts. i really hope this is a tradition that will coontinue. I believe if it were in mid season as Steve says then you would have players and managers more interested in injury, for example say you were in 1st place would you really want your ace pitching say 3 games in mid-season? HELL NO!... This is great for the world to catch on to why baseball is so great, also our greatest will be on display for the world to see and I am sure it will capture more of a diverse audience that will spill over into to the major league season...
But since this is happening, I like Mexico's chances, but mostly I like the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico's chances...

it's hard to pick, because another STUPID thing this brings on is people playing for countries they weren't necessarily born in. For instance A-Rod, playing for the US but wasn't born here. Sure that is great news for the US, but there are other players who haven't decided, i.e. Manny Ramierez.
If you're going to have a World Baseball Classic, then atleast have the players play for the country they were born in, that way it best represents each country.

You guys need to take notes on this sports issue. It is march and once again BigDog is back in the true junkie form. March Madness is here. This baseball thing is good for the sport I am glad the 1st one has this timing it should make the games in April and May more meaningful.. plus with pitch count and shit like that coo I watched Korea and Japan last night and I felt proud to be watching it.
