Ultra Back

Marcus Allen was the epitome of the Ultra back with over 10 thousand yards rushing and over 5 thousand yards receiving this cat was able to change the way a defense planned to stop the offense that he was on. We see players today that are comparable to Allen and are their teams Ultra Backs. There are only a few of these hybrid backs that can carry the load not only with running but blocking and receiving as well. Marshall Faulk is nearing the end of his career but the success he has brought his team is completely unbelievable. Ladanian Tomlinson and Tiki barber are today's featured Ultra backs and the ultra Backs are starting to become only a dime a dozen now a days. With running backs like Reggie Bush and DeAngelo Williams in this years draft we might get to see a few more and also see a new trend in the NFL just as we have seen the power a Hybrid tight end brings to an offense.

Marcus Allen was the shit on the original Tecmo Bowl (though Bo Jackon was better) but that was way back in time.

I fail to see how DeAngelo Williams will be an "ultra" running back. He is a small shifty running back. He has some speed, but he won't be able to move the pile. Would you consistantly give it to him on 3rd and 2, 4th and 1? He has caught less than 30 balls the last two years so how can we be sure he is a reliable receiving threat out of the backfield.

Why didn't you respond to my last point contradicting your comment about how great NCAA rushers are able to duplicate their success in the NFL. Why did you suddenly change the subject?

Yeah I agree...Red, I know you like Williams, but trying to compare him to an LT or even to Reggie Bush is a bit extreme. You keep referring him as a "hybrid" RB...do you even know what hybrid means?

Look, Williams is a decent RB at best, he may make a shockwave in the NFL rushing the ball, but nothing in his career gives away that he is capable of receiving 50+ catches per season. The guy has had less than 30 the past 2 seasons of college.

Hell, any RB can have 100 catches in the season if the offense throws to him enough. When you get solid WR, you don't need your RB to match that same intensity, i.e. LT. Two years ago LT had a shit load of catches, now Gates became the best TE, MacCardell became a threat along with Parker, you didn't see as many catches for LT...why? because they didn't need him to do that any longer.

The real question is can Williams produce as much as LT does? That remains to be seen, and who really knows until it happens or doesn't happen.

My personal view is I don't see Williams doing what LT or Faulk did in his career. I can see Williams having a successful career, but not in the same effect as those two (and certainly not in Allens case).

he isn't an "ultra" back, he isn't a "hybrid" back.

you failed to answer my most important question; how much more successfull will the Broncos running game be if they draft DeAngelo Williams?

hybrid (hi-brid) n. - The offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock.

my name is unimportant!
What is important is the fact that you are wrong and don't know what you are talking about.

The term "hybrid" is only being used lately because of the devolpment of former basketball players being turned into football players.

So by your definition and how the NFL and sports fans determine that definition who do you say is a hybrid player in the NFL... Imean I can say that Antonio Gates is of the TE position and Terrell Owens is of the WR position, why can't there be a RB that is a hybrid? Answer that, anonymous...

former basketball players (Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Wesley Duke)

I wouldn't consider Terrell Owens hybrid. He is just a very good receiver who posseses great speed and size.

Yeah okay I'lll let the draft speak for itself. Don't deny Denver needs to address the running back situation.

Here's a scenario I'd be really happy with...

Denver uses their first selection to take Williams or Maroney, then uses their 5th pick in the 2nd round to select Sinorice Moss or hopefully we can land Mathias Kiwanuka

The Colts will draft Williams or Marony and dominate again on offense. Denver really needs a QB that doesn't choke, a guty like Big Ben. The Bronc's have dominated the running game for years, that is not their problem.
Red could run for them for 1,000.
Wehn the Raiders draft Vince Young, they are assuring a bright future, he is a winner and should transfer that to the NFL.
